Homeland Security Provides Federal Grants to Nonprofit Institutions Such as Churches & Synagogues to Protect Against Terrorist Attacks
Any non-profit institution that is considered “at high risk of a terrorist attack” by Homeland Security or whose work or identity has been a target for hate may be eligible for funding to increase safety and security through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). If you believe your synagogue or church is vulnerable for hate crimes or attacks, find out if your institution is eligible for the grant.
Though the NSGP has been available since 2017, grants have been more prevalent since the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh last year, killing eleven people. Since that time, Jewish institutions in California have received federal grants to increase security up to $150,000. Since these grants are available by state, it’s essential to be knowledgeable of the process.
What to Consider When Applying for a Nonprofit Security Grant for Your Synagogue, Church, or Other Nonprofit Institution in Tennessee
Timing is critical when applying for a grant, so it’s important to do your homework. The availability of grants are typically announced in the spring by each state, and then institutions have approximately one month to apply, though sometimes applications are due within just a few days. With some uncertainty in timing and tight deadlines, make sure to do your research ahead of time, make the right contacts, and stay on top of the process.
When applying for a grant, first consider the needs of your congregation as well as your existing resources. Second, perform a voluntary Vulnerability Assessment through the Department of Homeland Security , the Secure Community Network , or local law enforcement. Third, contact law enforcement, local counsel, and your state agencies to determine whether a National Security Grant makes sense for your nonprofit institution.
In Tennessee, contact either of the following state agency representatives for more information about the NSGP:

Solar Insulation: A Name You Can Trust for High-Quality Nashville Security Film Installations
When it comes to increasing safety and security through a Nonprofit Security Grant at your synagogue, church, or other nonprofit institution, security film is part of the package. With a high-quality security film installation, you add a significant layer of protection to your facility from terrorists and active shooter situations.
When a gun is fired into a window or glass door, the glass shatters and an active shooter gains entry in seconds. While premium security film won’t stop a bullet, it holds the glass in place so that it doesn’t shatter to the floor, making the active shooter work much harder by using repetitive blunt force to get inside. When every second counts, high-quality security film has been shown to slow down active shooters by more than ninety seconds, giving everyone inside a chance to take cover and more time for emergency responders to arrive at the scene and defuse the situation.
Solar Insulation Window Films has been installing high-quality security film for Nashville nonprofit institutions, such as churches and synagogues, for more than forty years, and we can do the same for you. We are the market leader for Nashville window film, and our installations are to the highest quality standard.
