Why Nashville Schools & Facilities Need Ballistic Film to Protect Against Active Shooters
Richmond, Indiana – Thursday, December 13, 2018
On Thursday, December 13, a tip came into the Indiana State Police that someone was threatening to shoot up a middle school in Richmond, Indiana. Sixteen area schools were immediately put on lockdown, meaning no one could leave or enter the buildings, and law enforcement was dispatched.
Even though law enforcement and school officials did everything right, a 14-year-old active shooter still gained entry to the Dennis Intermediate School by shooting through the glass on a door. Since officers were already at the scene, they followed the teen inside and cornered him in a stairwell. Gunfire was exchanged, and the teen reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No faculty or students were injured.
The situation could have been much worse. On Thursday, a tip came in and law enforcement was present, which is not always the case. The important takeaway is that the active shooter got inside the building, and many lives were in jeopardy. This time the crisis was averted, but it could have easily gone another way.
No matter how many lockdowns you practice, an active shooter can gain entry to a facility by shooting through unprotected windows and glass doors. Bullets penetrate the glass, causing it to shatter and fall to the floor, and the shooter is inside in just seconds. To fully protect against an active shooter situation, windows and glass doors should be secured with ballistic film.
Ballistic Film Slows Down Active Shooters & Increases Emergency Response Time
When a bullet is fired and penetrates a window, ballistic film holds the glass in place upon impact. Though it won’t stop a bullet, the sophisticated technology in this security film stops the glass from shattering and falling to the ground, so there’s no easy way to get inside. The active shooter must work much harder and longer to gain access, allowing emergency response teams more time to arrive at the scene and defuse the situation.
Response time is critical, and demonstrations have shown that ballistic film slows down active shooters by more than 90 seconds. When every second counts, any way to slow down an intruder can save lives.
